Over 7000 of Volunteers joined us this June for the 6th year edition of the Chennai coastal cleanup, an initiative to create environmental awareness amongst people on increasing garbage footprint and the negative impacts of plastics on our environment and health. More than seven thousand incredible volunteers helped cleaning up the 20 km stretch of coastal beaches and waterways removing more than 50 tonnes of litter from the beaches.
Marine litter is a problem that we all can play a part in solving, and what better way to start giving back to the city that we live in.
Chennai’s beautiful coastline is at the heart of many. Litter on these beaches rose exponentially compared to the previous years and reported a 50% rise in the number of plastic bags found on beaches compared to the previous year. From this year on, Thadhani Safety will be sponsoring the event and working closely with Chennai clean-up campaign team to organise periodical clean-up of Chennai’s beaches and other polluted areas in the city. The last Chennai coastal cleanup campaign was held on June 7, 2015 – helping to preserve sea life at risk of ingesting plastic rubbish.
During this campaign, volunteers collected over 50 tonnes of litter, including cans, wrappers, bottles and plastic bags! The Chennai coastal clean-up drive has grown year on year by leaps and bounds, involving thousands of amazing volunteers from all over ready to don gloves and bags to clear trash. This fantastic partnership between J. Thadhani & Co. and the Chennai coastal cleanup team raises awareness on the issue and the need for nationwide action across governments, industries and voluntary sectors to stop littering and make living spaces clean.
